Church Conference in Hockessin

A Message of Purpose and Balance

The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as the church community gathered for a special conference held in the heart of Hockessin, Delaware. The town, known for its blend of luxury and convenience, was the perfect backdrop for a weekend of spiritual reflection and renewal. Hockessin, with its picturesque parks and trails, elegant homes, and top-tier schools, represented a balance of comfort and opportunity that many in the congregation could relate to.

The conference kicked off with a powerful opening session, and it was clear that this event would be unlike any other. The speaker for the weekend, Frankie, a passionate and insightful leader, stood before the audience with an undeniable sense of purpose. She was ready to take the congregation on a journey of faith, focusing not only on spiritual growth but also on finding balance in the midst of an affluent and busy lifestyle. Frankie understood that the members of this community, living in such a well-off area, often struggled with the tension between their material comfort and their spiritual commitments. Yet, she was determined to help them see that it was possible to live a life of purpose while enjoying the benefits of their surroundings.

As Frankie opened her message, she acknowledged the beauty of Hockessin. The town, with its beautiful parks and nature trails, was an emblem of God’s creation. She spoke to the congregation about the importance of engaging with nature, as it was a powerful reminder of God’s design and the peace that can be found in the natural world. “When we take time to enjoy the beauty around us,” Frankie said, “we can connect with God in ways that go beyond the walls of our church. We see His handiwork in the trees, the sky, and the earth beneath our feet. But we must also remember that there is more to life than simply enjoying these things. God has a greater purpose for us.”

She then delved into the concept of living an affluent lifestyle and how easy it is to become consumed by material pursuits. “Living in a place like Hockessin,” Frankie explained, “offers a certain allure. The homes are beautiful, the schools are excellent, and the amenities like golf courses and country clubs provide a lifestyle that many people desire. But we must remember that our worth is not measured by the size of our home or the prestige of our zip code. True fulfillment comes from knowing our purpose in Christ.”

Frankie spoke directly to those in the audience who had achieved success in their careers, enjoying the benefits of an upscale community. She acknowledged the importance of financial stability and success but reminded everyone that those things should never become the center of our lives. “God has placed you in this community for a reason,” she said. “Hockessin is known for its excellent employment options, and many of you have found fulfilling work here. But your job, your career, your wealth—these are not your identity. Your identity is in Christ. And it is from Him that you find your true worth and purpose.”

As the session continued, Frankie shifted the focus to the balance between enjoying the good things in life and maintaining a deep, meaningful relationship with God. She used the example of the various housing options in Hockessin, from apartments and condos to single-family homes, to highlight the idea that life is not about having more but about having enough. “Some of you may live in beautiful, spacious homes,” she said, “while others may find peace in a smaller, more modest space. The key is to be content with what God has given you and to use what you have to honor Him.”

Frankie spoke of how the pursuit of material wealth can often become a distraction from the more important things in life, such as family, faith, and community. She reminded everyone that while it is okay to enjoy the benefits of an affluent lifestyle, those things should never overshadow the call to live a life of purpose. “God has given you the ability to enjoy this beautiful town and all its offerings,” she said, “but don’t let that be your sole focus. Let your purpose in Christ guide your actions, your relationships, and your priorities. The parks, the trails, the restaurants—these are all blessings, but they are not the foundation of your life. Your foundation is Christ.”

Frankie encouraged everyone to get involved in their community, using their resources and skills to make a positive impact. She spoke about the importance of service, particularly in a town like Hockessin, where there is a strong sense of community and opportunity. “You are blessed with many amenities and comforts here,” she said. “But remember that with blessing comes responsibility. How can you use what God has given you to bless others? How can you serve your neighbors, your church, and your town in ways that reflect the love of Christ?”

By the end of the first session, the message was clear: it’s possible to enjoy the good things life has to offer, but they should never replace the greater calling to live out your faith. Frankie’s words resonated deeply with the audience, many of whom had been reflecting on the balance between their busy lives and their spiritual commitments. The conference was a reminder that living in a town like Hockessin—a place of luxury, opportunity, and natural beauty—was not just about enjoying the fruits of material success but about using those blessings to fulfill a higher purpose.

Throughout the weekend, Frankie continued to guide the congregation through sessions focused on finding peace, pursuing purpose, and serving others. There were moments of quiet reflection, group discussions, and powerful prayers, all centered around the theme of living with purpose in an affluent world. The message was simple yet profound: while Hockessin may offer a balance of luxury and convenience, the true balance comes from aligning one’s life with God’s purpose, using the resources at hand to make a difference in the world.

By the time the conference came to a close, the attendees left with a renewed sense of purpose. They had been reminded that while Hockessin was a wonderful place to live, the true richness of life was found in living with Christ at the center of everything. They were ready to take the message of the weekend and apply it to their own lives, using their blessings to serve God and others in meaningful ways.

Vicki’s Dream: Coins and Family in Republic

Republic, a small town in Northeast Washington, began as Eureka Gulch in the 1890s. Back then, the land was rich with gold and timber, drawing miners and loggers. They built rough-hewn cabins, narrow streets, and saloons that never seemed to close. By 1900, the town had changed its name to Republic, reflecting the independent spirit of its people.

The heart of Republic became its architectural landmarks. Kaufman Cabin, built in 1896, still stands, a reminder of the town’s rugged beginnings. The Republic Cemetery offers sweeping views of the valley, the Sanpoil River, and the Kettle Range. The landscape has always shaped the people who live there—practical, resilient, and deeply tied to the land.

Amidst this history, a young woman named Vicki Dunn made her mark one summer. Vicki had grown up in Republic, the daughter of a stern but kind father, Henry Dunn, who was known for his collection of old coins. Henry had a sharp eye for detail and a deep respect for history. His coins, neatly stored in velvet-lined boxes, were his pride and joy.

Vicki, restless in the slow rhythm of small-town life, decided to leave for Spokane one July. She carried a small part of her father’s coin collection with her, hoping to sell it online. Henry had reluctantly agreed, his words lingering in her mind: “Coins hold stories, Vicki. Don’t sell the wrong ones.”

In Spokane, Vicki rented a tiny room and listed the coins on eBay. At first, sales were slow, but soon, interest grew. Collectors messaged her with offers, questions, and stories about their own collections. Vicki found the work tedious. She missed the familiar streets of Republic, the cool air of the Kettle Range, and the sound of the Sanpoil River. At night, she dreamed of her family. In one dream, her father’s voice echoed: “Not all coins are for selling, Vicki. Some hold more than value.”

After two weeks, Vicki’s dreams grew vivid and unsettling. She saw her father’s weathered hands, her mother’s quiet smile, and her younger brother, Leo, staring at an empty table. She woke up one night with a decision: she would go back. The coins, the city, and the online marketplace felt hollow compared to the pull of home.

Vicki’s return to Republic wasn’t as she expected. Her mother hugged her tightly. Leo grinned and asked her about Spokane. Henry, however, stood silent. “Did you bring back what’s left?” he asked.

“Yes, Dad,” Vicki said, handing him the unsold coins. “But I sold some. I… I needed to try.”

Henry nodded but said nothing. The family gathered for dinner that night, the air thick with unspoken words. Vicki explained her dreams and how they had drawn her home.

“Dreams are tricky,” Leo said. “They’re not always about what you think.”

Henry spoke finally. “What did you learn, Vicki?”

Vicki thought for a moment. “That it’s not just about selling. Coins are more than money. They’re a part of something bigger.”

“Good,” Henry said. “Then you understand.”

The family’s conversations grew warmer over the following days, but Vicki sensed an unease in her father. One evening, Henry revealed a secret. Among the coins Vicki had sold was a rare piece—a 1794 silver dollar. It wasn’t just valuable; it had been given to Henry by his own father.

“I should’ve told you,” Henry admitted. “But I wanted you to learn. Now, we’ll have to find it again.”

Vicki felt a pang of guilt but also determination. She contacted the buyer, a collector named Victor, who lived in Seattle. Vicki explained the coin’s significance and offered to buy it back. Victor, intrigued, agreed to meet.

Vicki and Henry made the journey to Seattle. Victor was a soft-spoken man with a passion for history. “This coin is special,” he said. “I’d planned to keep it, but your story changes things.”

Victor returned the coin without accepting payment. “Sometimes, history needs to stay where it belongs,” he said.

Back in Republic, Vicki and Henry decided to start a new project. Together, they created a small museum in town, showcasing the coin collection and other artifacts from Republic’s past. They called it the Spirit of Republic Museum, a place to preserve the town’s history and share its stories with others.

Visitors came, drawn by the exhibits and the tales Vicki and Henry shared. The museum became an architectural landmark in its own right, a symbol of the town’s enduring spirit. Vicki’s month-long journey had brought her back to her roots, with a deeper understanding of her family and the place they called home.

Millionaire in a month

Does Money Come out of Your spirit

MILLIONAIRE IN A MONTH

“That is what the motivational speaker said.”

Introduction:

The motivational speaker is telling the people at a conference in the city of London, England,
” Last time I was here I told you, that you can be a millionaire in a month.”
I am watching this on my television screen as it comes through the computer. It is about 9.00 p.m. Lorna has already gone to bed.
The speaker tells the people a second time;
”You can be a millionaire in a month.”
The audience loves it. They are going wild.
I am waiting for him to give a testimony, an example of someone that experienced this amazing prediction.
Surely he won’t leave us all hanging in mid-air?

Chapter 1

Afew days later I am reading a book about a young girl who has a convulsion at home and goes into a coma. The father is writing the book.
He was involved in sports coaching early in his career and he is using all the principles he learnt as he tries to get the hospital staff and doctors to believe for his daughter to get better.
She is lying in a coma; the doctors cannot find any brain function on the monitors. The father is not allowing anyone who does not believe… to come into the room.
Everyone is annoyed.
Late at night he starts to talk to his daughter.
He thinks he can see a response.
He goes into coaching mode and encourages his daughter to move her big toes so they touch.
Her feet are spread apart. But they slowly move closer.
It takes an hour to make progress.
In the meantime, the nursing staff have come in the room and told him to quieten down. When he points out to them that his daughter’s feet have moved, he is treated with disdain.
They watch for a while but cannot see any movement.
After they leave, he continues to encourage his daughter until her toes touch. He is ecstatic!
She is alive in her seemingly immobile body, not only alive but communicating with her father.
The father is convinced all of this is happening because he is believing.
I stop reading and think about the power of belief.
My thoughts go back to the speaker in London.
He said,” You can be a millionaire in a month.”
He wasn’t speaking to me, maybe he just said it because he wanted to motivate the people or shock them.
I thought about the story of the father and his daughter.
Even if the end result is not what we want, things might be, just might be, slightly improved.
What if someone left that conference and believed they were going to be a millionaire in a month, would their believing affect their circumstances in a positive way?
That may not have happened if they proceeded to go about their lives for the next month in their ordinary state of mind?
In other words, if they expect something to be different in a month, will that expectation cause an actual change in their situation and would the results be measurable?
Here is my idea… what if I believe to be a millionaire in a month and therefore get up every day for the next 30 days imagining the result, speaking the result, and trying to feel the result?
There must be some way to measure the power of my believing.
It would be interesting to see whether my finances or book sales increase and by how much.
I can start writing about my experiment today.
Even if the change is small, it will be better than no change at all.

Chapter 2

This is one of my favourite stories; I have included it on day two of my experiment because it is a great example of the principle that…
” a small result is better than no result at all.”
When a team of scientists in London first used penicillin they failed, but in their failure they succeeded.
The patient died but that did not mean the drug did not work, it just did not work enough to save his life.
He did initially start to recover.
Our believing works the same way.
We must be like these scientists and realise that we are on the right track even though we are not yet winning. We know that our believing works; all we have to do, is learn how to make it work on a higher level.

The story of penicillin – the first antibiotic to successfully treat people with serious infectious diseases – begins with a bit of luck.
Alexander Fleming, a British scientist, noticed in 1928 that mould had prevented the growth of bacteria in his lab.
But the main plot of the story involves the rediscovery of penicillin 10 years later by an Australian scientist:
Howard Florey and his team transformed penicillin from an interesting observation into a life saver.

Penicillin kills bacteria by blocking cell wall growth.
In May, 1940 they performed one of the most important medical experiments in history on mice in the laboratory.
The results were so exciting: Florey knew that it was time to test the drug on humans.
But Florey’s team didn’t have enough of the drug to see the patient through to a full recovery and he unfortunately had a re-lapse and died.
Because of this experience, the team then concentrated their efforts on sick children, who did not require such large quantities.

I would like to quote part of the story… where they realise, they did not have enough of the substance.
But Florey’s team didn’t have enough of the drug to see the patient through to a full recovery and he unfortunately had a re-lapse and died.”
They knew how to make the drug, but they did not have the ability to make it in large quantities.
So they needed help.
Here is what they did:
“But the team needed drug companies to help produce the large amounts required.”

And that is how sharing your vision with other like-minded people helps to grow the vision.
There is a war going on between belief and un-belief.
We have to surround ourselves with believing believers.

Chapter 3

Today is the third day of my project, since starting this journey three days ago a lot has changed and little has changed.
I thought up this idea as a bit of fun and now it is taking on a life of its own. My thinking is being influenced in a good way; I am realising how much seed I have sown in different areas of my life.
I am also realising how little expectation I have for a harvest.
But I have been asleep.
I have not been expecting anything.
Some of you may have read about my three-year experiment.
I set myself a goal to read positive and motivational books once a week for three years.
I completed that goal early this year and it did result in some very special changes in my life. As time has gone on, I have stopped expecting any further results from sowing all those positive words into my heart.
Life has a way of convincing you…“That this is all there is.”
But now I have embarked on my, “Millionaire in a Month,” journey…I have been woken from my slumber.
The whole world knows, “that you reap what you sow.”
Farmers live by this, but I have not been living by this principle.
I have given away a lot of money, I have given away a lot of positive books and I have spent a lot of time listening to motivational speakers.
And now almost by accident I hear a motivated man challenging his audience that they can be a millionaire in a month.
And I decide in a half serious way to take up his challenge.
What I have really done is wake myself up to perceive all the seed I have sown!
By the way, remember the story I was telling you about the father and his daughter who was in a coma.
The story became all about waking her up from her deep sleep.
As she slowly regained consciousness, she slowly regained her movement and eventually her parents were able to take her home.
The key was; to make her aware of her surroundings.
As she became aware, she was able to use her inbuilt abilities, she was able to take advantage of natural gifts that were already there.
Her father along with the hospital staff were able to coach her to wake up to the possibilities of walking and talking again.
When you set a goal, you are actually creating a virtual coach.
That goal will wake you up to all the possibilities that are lying dormant within.
My experiment proves this because even though I have set a ridiculous goal of being a millionaire in a month, that goal has motivated me to sit down and write a brand-new book.
I thought I had finished writing, now I am back writing with a new motivation. Where did this motivation come from?
It has appeared out of nowhere.
It has been created from nothing but an idea.
Ideas are free.
So my imaginary coach is free…free coaching is a new idea.
Perhaps that will make me rich.

Chapter 4

Today we have the G20 world leaders meeting in Brisbane, Australia.
And today is going to be one of our hottest days of the year.
As I am writing these words, I hear two “Super Hornet” military jets fly over my house.
So I have gone outside to watch them go past, they are going so fast that the noise you hear is not indicating where to look for the jet.
You must look ahead of the noise to see where the jet is placed.
Your ears are telling you wrong information; your eyes are more accurate.
In 1980 the pastor of the largest church in Korea published a book called;
The Fourth Dimension.”
In the book he writes about the difficulty the Christian ministers were having with the Buddhist monks because the monks were healing people from their sicknesses.
The Buddhist monks were developing “their spirits” by various means.
Such as visions and mental pictures of health.
These monks, by exploring and developing their inner spirit in such a way, can carry out dominion upon their physical circumstances.
The Korean pastor was motivated to learn how to develop his spirit by using his imagination.
He writes in his book that these principles helped him to oversee a huge pattern of growth in his church so that eventually his church became the largest church in the world.
While he kept imagining what he wanted his church to become he was assailed on all sides by voices of unbelief.
He used the spiritual eyes of his imagination to drown out the voice of reason.
The main lesson in these stories is that the human spirit can influence the natural world. When we focus on a goal or vision we are training our spirit through our imagination.
My background is in sales, I have been exposed to a lot of motivational speakers and their material over the years.
I am always amazed at the similarities between these motivational speakers and the preachers that people regularly listen to.
They both get people motivated; they both teach good principles such as putting your customer first.
They both teach about goal setting and using your imagination to be creative. They both inspire people to aim to be a better person.
And they both get results.
In all these things, Christians have an advantage.
Christians have a lot of practise in using the eyes of their spirit to discern spiritual realities.
Christians should find it easy to develop their imagination so they can visualise their dreams and visions.
I would like to go back to the story of the father and his comatose daughter.
He had been a sports coach for years and not all his dreams had come to pass.
But his coaching experience had taught him how to harness the art of using his imagination and believing.
To focus on a different result than the one that was in existence at the time.
In this challenge for his daughter’s life he was able to draw on those skills that were already at a very developed stage.
And he was so happy to have used sport as a means to do this.
All around him in the intensive care unit at the hospital he was hearing how bad things were.
But in the middle of this battle, he was able to open the eyes of his heart and imagine a new day…in which his daughter was healthy and whole.
Finally, even some of the doctors were won over by his believing and his focus and his inner motivation.
He heard what they heard but he did not see what they saw.
Like the jets that have just flown past my house, where my ears thought they were was inaccurate.
My eyes saw where they really were… and to do that I had to focus my concentration ahead of the noise.
A long way ahead.

Chapter 5

I have just received the mail and opened a letter from the city council.
It is a parking fine for a $113.
Great!
Thanks a lot Brisbane City Council.
How am I going to stay in a positive frame of mind with this sort of rubbish going on?
Easy, I will pay it and move on.
I go into the city about once a year, no big deal.
Don’t they realise that I may be a millionaire very soon?
How you see yourself and how others see you can be very different.
I recently asked a young man what plans and goals he had.
And he said,
”I want to own an airline.”
I asked what kind of airline, thinking he was going to start his own with maybe one small plane?
He said, “I want to own Qantas our national airline.”
I didn’t know how to reply, that airline is worth billions of dollars.
Up to that time I had always thought of this young man in a very positive light.
Now I was worried about his emotional state.
People don’t mind if you tell them you are going to be a millionaire in a month if you say it in a slightly humorous way.
So I explain to them… that it is like a scientific experiment.
To see whether I can get my business, my finances and my books to increase.
Without changing any other factor.
For instance, if I sell 20 books in a normal month what will be the sales results of this month if in the meantime I try to imagine myself as a millionaire?
Why don’t I pay that fine as if money is no problem?
Here you are… Brisbane City Council, here is your money, it doesn’t bother me!
I have got plenty of money; there is a lot more of that stuff around here.
I need to develop a bit of swagger.
I can go into character like the Hollywood actors and play the role of a rich man.
I would have to learn how to think rich and how to act rich.
Somehow, we need to dissociate ourselves from our present circumstances and the way to do this is different and variable, because what works for one might not work for another.
Here is the story of a man who thought he was not successful and while he lived his life as if that was a fact, he was unaware of the real situation.
We may not always be as trapped as we think we are.
Something, somewhere out there may be happening beyond our horizon.
Our sense of true north may not be accurate.
This is a newspaper interview and article about a documentary called Searching for Sugar Man:
When Rodriguez first came to notice at the start of the 70s, he had the makings of a folk-rock star – the next Bob Dylan, as his co-producer Dennis Coffey put it.
But somehow stardom eluded him.
His albums, Cold Fact and Coming from Reality, sank without a trace in the US and Rodriguez sank with them.
In fact, he returned quietly to Detroit and became a labourer.
Meanwhile, totally unknown to him, his music was gaining a huge fan base in South Africa where it’s politically charged lyrics had struck a chord with a growing anti-apartheid movement.
His South African fans believed him dead, and neither word of his popularity in that isolated country nor royalties from hundreds of thousands of his albums trickled back to the US.

The documentary tells how, after the fall of apartheid, three dedicated fans finally tracked Rodriguez down to a tiny house in Detroit and flew him to South Africa in 1998 for a triumphant, back-from-the-dead tour.
“It was incredible,” he says.
“They were just so good to me.”
“It was amazing.”

Isn’t this man lucky and unlucky at the same time?
He missed his opportunity through no fault of his own and then because of three good people he was reunited with the success that was always his and some of the money that belonged to him.
His dream became a reality.
Maybe in his early life he walked and talked as if he had a lot to contribute to the music scene.
He was inspiring people in a far-off land and he did not know it.
He was making money and he did not know it.
He was successful and he was the last person to find out about that success.

Chapter 6

My first job after school was as a laboratory sample preparer and I had to relocate from the city of Adelaide to the very, very, isolated town of Dampier at the top of Western Australia.
Dampier is a port for most of Australia’s iron ore.
As the iron ore was loaded onto the ships I had to take samples for the laboratory.
The town had a population of 2000 people; most of them were young men from different countries around the world.
They got these jobs because the place was so isolated.
No-one else wanted to work there and the money was good.
I was meeting people from England, Ireland, and Canada.
They loved to talk about the countries in Asia they had visited.
Guess what?
I picked up the travel bug; I got influenced by their stories.
When I finished my 6-month contract I began to travel.
The first place I went to was Bali in Indonesia which I loved.
The beach lifestyle suited me in a big way.
Then I travelled up through South-East Asia to Nepal, then India and onto Europe.
While I enjoyed Europe, I did not enjoy the weather, it was so cold, I kept thinking of Bali and the beach lifestyle.
Eventually I gave in and bought a plane ticket to Thailand and then found my way back down to Bali, where I stayed a long time.
May I point out a few observations from this story?
The first is, notice how I picked up the vision to travel.
Before I mixed with all those travellers I had no thoughts about travel, I had no friends or family who had travelled.
It was the 1970’s…no internet, no computer and I was just out of school.
Yet as soon as I was hanging around people with a vision, I caught their vision. I did not have one of my own so I picked up theirs.
It is a powerful thing to immerse yourself in the atmosphere and culture of the environment in which you are living.
Now for a big leap from the 1970’s to 2015.
Here I am doing something completely different.
I am after another experience, one that I have never had before.
I want to ride the wave of financial success.
In Bali I met a whole group of guys that were surfers.
I had never surfed before and I was dreadful, I couldn’t surf.
But no-one discouraged me, I just kept turning up at the beach, it was a lot of fun.
The guys in Bali were a little strange, but that did not bother me.
They were willing to share their craft and skills.
Who am I going to mix with while I spend a month believing to be a millionaire?
I came up with a perfect solution.
YouTube is full of videos of these motivational speakers telling anyone who will listen how to get rich.
Every night I have been watching these guys walk up and down the stage of some conference explaining their story or someone else’s story of how to do it. They sure get excited.
And yes, they are a little strange like my surfing friends from years ago.
But it’s free and they all seem to be millionaires, where else am I going to find millionaires willing to share their vision except on the internet.
I am finding it pretty easy to watch them, because it’s for a reason and a relevant purpose.
I watch these men get excited and I want to get excited along with them.
They are funny and entertaining, I don’t agree with everything they say.
I didn’t agree with everything my surfing friends said or did, but I still wanted to catch what they had.
They knew how to do something that I didn’t, and I wanted to learn from them.
But not necessarily learn to be like them.

Chapter 7

One of my favourite movies is the popular Anthony Hopkins movie, “The World’s Fastest Indian.
This movie was based on the story of Burt Munro, a New Zealand-born motorcycle racer who became famous for setting a world record in 1967.
The true story of Burt’s life is just as captivating as the film.
Munro grew up in the early 1900′s on a farm in New Zealand.
He often rode horses around the farm at a very young age because he enjoyed the fast ride.
Burt stayed on the family farm until his father sold it near the end of World War I.
He spent some time working construction until joining his father to work on a new farm.
After this, he became a speedway racer for a short while, and eventually found work as a motorcycle salesman and mechanic.
Given his love for speed, Burt soon purchased an Indian Scout motorcycle. The motorcycle was very early off the production line and topped out at a speed of just 55 miles per hour.
Burt was unhappy with the speed of the Indian Scout, so he began to modify the bike.
He spent years working on his bike, which he called the “Munro Special,” since it was made up of many parts that he made himself, being a man with little money.
Despite his limited means and age, Burt started racing his motorcycle and went on to set several world records with his Indian Scout in the 1960s.
The reason I like this story is because this man elevated himself to an international level of achievement by a very simple means, he made his motorcycle go faster, it’s that simple.
All you have to do to get a film made about your life story, is do one thing, one activity better than anyone else has done it.
Everyone loves a world record holder.
Often it does not matter what the record is.
Simply running faster than anyone else will make you rich and famous.
Have you ever wondered why the world is designed to promote record holders?
Why people are drawn like moths to a flame.
I remember a famous person visiting our primary school in the 1960’s.
Herb Elliot won Gold in the 1500m event at the 1960 Rome Olympics.
From 1957 to 1961, Elliot never lost a 1500m or one mile race.
This man took all the school kids to the oval and gave us tips on how to run.
I don’t remember anyone else who visited our school from that era.
He made an impression because he was famous and he was famous because he could run fast.
We may not be competing in a sport but we are competing against other people in our careers or in the marketplace with our business, or we can be competing against ourselves.
I have seen this with those who play golf.
Because you get an exact score with every game you play, you can compete against the score you got last week.
The game of golf allows you to measure your progress with precision.
As a family we noticed this when computer games first came out.
We got the children a Nintendo game for Christmas and took it on holidays with us.
You would be amazed to see how everyone was determined to get a better score each day and progress to new levels in the game.
New levels gave you extra power for your computer character and new abilities.
The family member who was winning had boasting rights.
The big discovery we made was how someone’s mood would change depending on their result.
If they got a high score, they would get happy, very happy.
Improving your score and going to a new level is a good feeling.
And the scientists tell us that we experience happiness when certain chemicals are released in the brain.
How else would you explain Burt Munro spending his whole life making his motorbike go faster or how do you explain someone like Herb Elliott practising day after day in the heat and in the cold.
When he was healthy and when he was not so healthy.
When it was convenient and when it was not.
It feels good to achieve in the big things and in the small things.
I have not been able to start my leaf blower for months and then I go out yesterday and give it one last try before giving up on it.
To my surprise it starts and runs as if there had never been a problem.
That made me happy!
Chemicals were released in my brain!
The great news is… humans love to be motivated and we don’t care where that motivation comes from.
It could come from winning a random competition.
When my daughter was getting married, she won $500’s of flowers for her wedding by entering a competition on the radio.
Earlier this week the wife of the man who tunes our piano was telling me that her husband had stopped playing the piano and had lost the interest and desire.
She went on to share that very recently she and her husband were invited to a birthday party that was being held for a musician friend they had known for many years.
At the party everyone got in the mood and started playing together in a jam session.
She encouraged her husband to join in but he held back because he was out of practise.
She said,” eventually the atmosphere was too strong and he could not resist.”
He joined in and had a blast, much to his wife’s delight.
She said,” He was drawn in!”
If we surround ourselves with motivated people the energy in the room energises us.
We can get drawn back into our gift, back into a state of believing and therefore achieving.
Even doing a little better in a small thing can influence us into taking on the bigger challenge and though you may be all alone, remember this.
Someone, somewhere out there believes in you.

Chapter 8

The motivational speakers that I have been listening to have been saying,
” Our situation can turn in a day.”
One of the most popular speakers in the U.S.A. has an ongoing theme of hope and inspiration.
His message inspires millions of people.
He says, “Don’t give up, things can be put right in an instant.”
And he says, “Don’t give up, get a plan for your life.”
Another of his themes is,” believe you will be raised up to a new level of success.”
This message is so simple, yet this speaker continues to attract a huge audience.
He talks a lot about the influence negative people can have on us and uses school teachers as an example.
And even though I have heard it all before the underlying principle still stirs something in me.
In one of his conferences, he was telling a story about teachers and their influence.
Here is the last sentence which sums up the experience of students in hopefully rare but real situations.
“When the teacher was leaving, he said:’ Look, I can tell you this now.
When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer.
During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams.
Fortunately, you had enough gumption not to give up on yours’.”

No-one likes a dream stealer; this teacher was probably unaware of the power of his words.
Many adults can still remember a teacher who influenced them for good or for evil.
Dreams are delicate things, they can be formed in a minute by an unusual experience and last a life time.
I am writing this book because I turned on the television and heard a motivational speaker say,” You can be a millionaire in a month.”
That is a seed thought for sure.
Fancy telling someone they can be a millionaire in a month.
I feel challenged to put my dreams down on paper in a clear and concise way. Here is my dream.
“To see my finances go to a new level.”
I believe this should happen for every person who is motivated, so I do not consider it unusual.

Chapter 9

The Poseidon bubble was a stock market bubble in which the price of Australian mining shares soared in late 1969, and then crashed in early 1970.
It was triggered by the Poseidon NL company’s discovery of a promising site for nickel mining in September 1969.
In the late 1960s, nickel was in high demand due to the Vietnam War, and there was a shortage of supply due to industrial action against the major Canadian supplier.

In September 1969, the mining company Poseidon NL made a major nickel discovery at Windarra in the Shire of Laverton, Western Australia.
In early September their shares had been trading at $0.80, but as information about the discovery was released, the price rose until it was trading at $12.30 on October 1.
After this, the price continued to climb due to speculation.
Poseidon shares peaked at a high of $280 in February 1970, and fell rapidly thereafter.

In 1969 I was 13yrs old, and I remember my father coming home after work with two of his friends for a few drinks.
They were all very excited.
The reason they were so excited was because one of these men was my father’s best friend and this man was a stockbroker on the Adelaide Stock Exchange.
This stockbroker had managed to get my father some shares in Poseidon NL at around a $1 per share and they had shot up to $10 per share that day.
This memory still has the atmosphere attached to it.
As I am writing, I can still feel the excitement of their conversation and exuberant behaviour.
They were involved in one of the biggest stock market bubbles in history.
All over Australia people were becoming millionaires in a month and some even in a week.
So, it is possible, just not probable.
All that must happen is…for you to be in the right place at the right time doing the right thing and knowing the right people.
That share market opportunity came along once in a life time.
Please… do not let me miss any opportunities that are coming my way.
May I see what I need to see, hear what I need to hear, understand what I need to understand and meet the people I need to meet.

I met a man in 2005 who was making big money in his share trading on Australian mining companies.
He knew some of the top stockbrokers in Perth, Western Australia.
These stockbrokers were helping him get in on the ground floor as these mining companies launched batches of new shares onto the market.
He had been talking to me for about two years about getting involved but I had resisted.
He even offered to trade on my behalf, all I had to do was open an account and he would put the seed money in, and when my account was in profit, he would take his money back out.
It sounded so good that I could not resist.
I opened the account and he did proceed to make money on my behalf.
He was good to his word.
But the financial crisis hit and everything changed.
The financial crisis of 2007–2008, also known as the Global Financial Crisis, is considered by many to have been the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s.
It threatened the total collapse of large financial institutions, and stock markets dropped worldwide.
I had delayed my decision for two years and I missed a very good opportunity.
This man did not make a million in a month, but before the financial crisis he had been well on the way to be in a position where it would have been possible.
My father made money on the share market because he knew a man and I had a similar experience.
These connections may have come about by coincidence but at the time it sure looked good to me!
When you buy shares in a mining company you are giving the company money, they need for day to day running expenses, and also money they need for growth and expansion.
Only when the company grows does your investment grow, if your money is just used up for running costs and paying wages the value involved is not increasing.
The speakers are telling their audience a similar story.
Therefore these motivational speakers are implying in subtle and not so subtle ways that one day your investment is going to come back to you in a big way.
Because what you have invested in… will grow exponentially.
We are investing in ourselves when we do self-improvement courses.
This must be why they keep saying,
“Today is your day!”
We do not know what day our harvest will appear, but for some of us it could be ready to drop.
Someone, somewhere around the world has just woken up to find out their lives have been changed for the better financially.
We celebrate with them and look forward to our turn.
We are thankful for all the investment opportunities that have come our way over the years and trust that our losses will turn into profits in the right season.
A disaster can turn into an unexpected and pleasant surprise.
This does not happen all the time, but it does happen some of the time.
The outcomes are not predictable.
There is one predictable thing we do know.
“A man will reap what he sows.”
Positive words are seed.
Positive thoughts are seed.
Positive actions are seed.

Chapter 10

The secret to creating wealth is tied up with creating believing power.
Most people accept the fact that you can increase your believing by hearing positive words.
The book I have found most helpful on this subject says;

“The words you speak can cause you to experience freedom and increase, or cause you to live a life of bondage and lack.
People do not realize the power of their tongue.
It is the ultimate creative force, and this dynamic potential is inside of you.

The story in this book is about a man who owns a farm, he is in debt, the crops are failing and his money is running out.
He gets hold of a book and he discovers that his words have power.
He then writes down a list of statements that can build up his believing in the area of finances.
Every day for over two years he speaks those words out loud and at the same time he trains himself to say only positive words in his normal conversation.

One day he is around the family table when the phone rings.
Someone offers him an investment opportunity.
He accepted the deal and when he hung up his family asked him where he was going to get the money from?
Without thinking he replied, “Money is no problem!”
Suddenly he realised that those words came right out of his spirit.

[I am quoting the words he used to describe what he thought happened in that moment of inspiration].
As far as he was concerned there was no other explanation.
He spoke those creative words, “Money is no problem!” from somewhere deep inside.
Notice he did it spontaneously and used the term, “Without thinking.”
He was in no doubt at all about where the money was coming from.
It was coming from the same place that those words came from.
His spirit.

DOES MONEY COME OUT OF YOUR SPIRIT?

Is that where the creative ideas come from?
The ideas that create wealth and add value to our lives.

He made a lot of money on that deal and went on to become a successful land developer and motivational speaker.

Chapter 11

I read part of another book recently, about a couple who had lost all their wealth.
I am not sure whether the book was based on a true story, I did not finish the book, but I enjoyed the part I read.
This is the outline of the story.
After the loss of their wealth this couple met a man who told them about an old lamp he had found among his grandmother’s possessions.
Apparently his grandmother believed the lamp always bought good fortune for the person who had it in their home.
This man told this poor and desperate couple that he would like for them to have it as a gift.

They did not want to embarrass him so they accepted his offer.
They took the lamp home and put it in their garage.
A few months later they began to notice a slight improvement in their circumstances.
They had been through such a dark time…any improvement was welcome.
Of course, they wondered whether there was any connection with the lamp.
Their curiosity was stirred.
They even got the lamp out of the garage and placed it in the house.
When they did this, they felt slightly cheered.
Not long after, they were speaking to the man who gave them the lamp and told him what was happening.
He was surprised by what they told him because he had found a second lamp among his grandmother’s belongings.
Therefore, he was not sure which lamp was the actual lamp that was supposed to bring good fortune.

I stopped reading the book at this point, but I had read enough to see that it was a great story about our believing and its effect on us.
You and I know we do not have to believe in an object.
We believe in positive words.
We believe in having a vision and plan.
We know that the inspiration of successful people rubs off on us.
Our situation is helped by a change in our thinking and our speech patterns.

The thing I most enjoyed about this story; is it illustrates how it is sometimes easier to believe in something else than it is to believe in ourselves.
For the same reasons, that it is easier to sing a song for someone else, or paint a picture for someone else.
One of the best illustrations for me is…when I go to sell my house;
I will fix things up and do all the jobs that normally would not get done just to impress the buyer.
Even when we have visitors over for a meal, we will clean the house to a higher level than we would if it was only Lorna and myself at home.
We are designed to be more motivated when we are doing things for someone else than when we are doing them for ourselves.

I think this is happening to me as I write this book.
I find that I am believing on the readers behalf.
Because I am imagining what someone else’s financial circumstances are.

This motivates me at higher level than if I was writing for myself.
It feels better to talk about someone else’s financial problems.
Instead of focusing on myself.
I am fortunate, because I do really believe in motivational teaching.
Not only do I believe in the power of believing.
I also believe in the creative ability of the human spirit.
Other people that I respect on the international stage also believe in the power of positive thinking.
A bit of confusion comes into the conversation because people use two different words to explain the same thing.
They use the words, “human heart and human spirit” to describe where our creative flow comes from.
I am happy to use either term.
I can feel a groundswell of opinion that is coming into agreement at this very moment.

Chapter 12

It is one month since I started this experiment.
I am not a millionaire yet!
But I have seen a significant improvement in my finances.
I AM MORE MOTIVATED.
My business is growing again and my book sales are improving.
I am remembering, “The story of penicillin” that I wrote about in chapter 2.
The doctors did not have enough of the drug to save a life, but they had enough to begin the process and eventually they figured out how to make enough of the drug to completely cure people.
The human spirit never gives up.
If we treat debt and financial failure as a type of sickness.
Then part of the cure has to be:
Inspired and positive thinking.
Creative speech.
Plans and a vision.
Getting encouraged.

And where do these flow from?

You might say they come from the mind, others might say they come from the heart.
I agree.
But in the end, I would like to say they come from the dignity of the human spirit.

Thanks for reading.
